Written by St. Teresa of Avila in 1577, The Interior Castle pictures the soul as a castle with many rooms, at whose center God Himself dwells. Through seven “mansions,” she explores prayer, purification, contemplation, spiritual trials and the transforming presence of God at the center of the soul.
About the author
St. Teresa of Jesus (1515–1582), a Carmelite nun of Avila, reformed her order together with St. John of the Cross and founded many convents of the Discalced Carmelites. In 1970 St. Paul VI proclaimed her the first woman Doctor of the Church.
